SAN DIEGO — I had the honor of speaking at San Diego City Council following a proclamation recognizing Chanukah earlier this month. During my remarks, I offered a message that seemed to resonate with the councilmembers: our tradition marks the moments when we Jews refuse to disappear.
Today, Jewish communities around the world are being reminded that visibility itself can invite danger. The antisemitic attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney was not random or disconnected. Nor was the drive-by shooting at a Redlands home decorated for Chanukah. Both of these horrific events reinforced a hard truth: when Jews live openly, visibly, and together, there are those who see that presence as intolerable.
The response cannot be withdrawal.
A bold, resilient Jewish community invests in its ability to stand in the open without apology. That requires preparation, coordination, and real infrastructure. It requires security that is proactive rather than reactive.
Community security is not something we can outsource or assume others will provide. It exists only because the Jewish community chooses to fund it together.
Jewish Federation of San Diego is uniquely positioned to deliver on that responsibility. Your support provides for:
–Coordinated security across schools, synagogues, and agencies
–Training leaders, members, and volunteers at Jewish institutions
–Ensuring public Jewish commemorations and celebrations are safe
–A full-time community security director who interfaces directly with local law enforcement and the national Secure Community Network
We turn collective resources into real protection so Jewish life can continue publicly and confidently.
