WASHINGTON, D.C. (Press Release) – The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has launched a newly produced animated version of its acclaimed exhibition Remember the Children: Daniel’s Story. The animated video adapts the exhibition’s narrative into a format accessible to young audiences, families, and educators. The video and exhibition share one family’s experiences during the Holocaust from the perspective of Daniel, a fictional boy, growing up in Nazi Germany. Daniel’s character represents the real experiences of millions of actual Jewish children during the Holocaust. The exhibition and video are based on actual diaries of Jewish children in Nazi Germany.
Opening with the Museum in 1993, Daniel’s Story has served as the Museum’s primary exhibition for young people and families. The new animation retains the exhibition’s chronological narrative. Developing an animated version of the exhibition supports the Museum’s efforts to engage young people in Holocaust history while preserving the sensitive, age-appropriate tone of the original exhibition.
“We created this animated version to allow Daniel’s Story to reach beyond the walls of the Museum,” said Sarah Lumbard, the Museum’s Director of Museum Experience and Digital Media. “For more than 30 years, Daniel’s Story has helped young people understand the Holocaust in an accessible way. This animation allows us to extend that experience into classrooms and homes around the world.”
The animated video of Daniel’s Story is now available on the Museum’s website and can be streamed for free on YouTube. A downloadable teachers’ guide accompanies the film.
