The recent harrowing July 4 incident on the Washington D.C. subway—where a Black woman was surrounded by white supremacist Neo-Nazis—serves as a stark reminder of the inescapable racism being supported in American society as free speech..
For Jewish Women of Color (JOCs), this is not an isolated or uncommon incident; it reflects the daily reality of navigating the compounding oppressions of antisemitism, racism, and colorism, in addition to gender discrimination. Whether sitting on public transit or standing in professional spaces, they face an unrelenting barrage of systemic bias and threat.
It is precisely against this backdrop of collective trauma that the JOC Women’s Retreat 2026: A Joyful, Restorative Retreat for Jewish Women of Color becomes essential. Scheduled midweek from August 25–27, 2026, this gathering offers a vital time away—a dedicated space to heal, relax, and build spiritual resilience.
Facilitated by Dr. Harriette Wimms—a renowned spiritual leader, community convener and social justice advocate—the retreat invites Jewish women of African, Asian, Indigenous, Latin, Sephardi, and Mizrahi heritage to rest and exhale. The program balances soul-nourishing Torah study and music circles with restorative crafting, poolside massages, and kosher-style meals. Dr. Wimms is a licensed clinical psychologist who served as the inaugural Jews of Color Engagement Coordinator for The Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore.
Options include an all-inclusive stay ($650) or a program-only commuter track ($350). The retreat is organized by the San Diego Jewish non-profit Playing Together Project. To register or support this vital sanctuary (scholarship contributions are welcome), visit playingtogether.org/jocws2026.
