San Diego Jews of Color (JoC) will convene Jews of African, Asian, Indigenous, Latin, Mizrahi, and Sephardic descent will gather at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 12, at the Lawrence Family JCC for an afternoon of rich storytelling, deep connection, and historic revelation.
This month’s program is titled “Kosher Chutzpah: The Wild History of Jewish Bootleggers & Global Merchants.“ It’s a look at the gritty, brilliant, and successful trading routes of Sephardic, Mizrahi, and North African Jews throughout history, from corsairs to early 20th-century immigrants to the United States. Young Israel of San Diego presents “A Pre-Tisha B’Av Screening: The Quarrel” at 4 p.m., Sunday, July 19. After a chance meeting in a park in 1948, two estranged friends, a rabbi and an agnostic writer, are compelled to resume an argument that caused division between them. Ner Tamid Synagogue presents “Tisha B’Av Services” at 8 p.m., Wednesday, July 22. Tisha B’Av, the 9th day of the month of Av, is the saddest day on the Jewish calendar, on which people fast and pray. It is the day to mark the destruction of both temples in Jerusalem and other tragedies throughout Jewish history.

National Council Young Israel presents “Tenacheim Bereavement Groups.” This is a supportive and safe space for individuals navigating the first year of grief. Support groups can help lessen feelings of isolation, provide healthy coping strategies, and offer guidance through the grieving process. Two group types include the spousal loss support group and the loss of adult parent/sibling group. These sessions will be led by group facilitator, Rabbi Steven Krul, a bereavement counselor, specializing in grief and group counseling for over 15 years. Click here to register.

Isidoro Lombrozo has died. He was the father of Benjamin, Jose, Sara, and Arlette, grandfather of Stephy, Ariela, Isidoro, Tatiana, Ari, Dafna, Yael, Ruthy, and Alexis. The funeral will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 8, at El Camino Memorial Cemetery, Ohr Shalom Synagogue.
