SAN DIEGO — “Four months of campaigning reminds me how much better I am at practicing law than politics,” he said in statement shared with local media.
Briggs announced his candidacy in January, following Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s annual State of the City speech in which he called for a removal of development restrictions to boost construction of affordable housing.
“So in the mayor’s race, if nobody else is gonna fight to protect San Diego’s environment and our quality of life, count me in,” Briggs said in a tweet.
His Briggs Law Corp. has brought suits against the city, San Diego Gas & Electric, the San Diego Convention Center, Walmart and many other high-profile companies and institutions. He is currently defending Julian’s volunteer firefighters from a takeover by the county.
Briggs’ exit leaves City Councilwoman Barbara Bry, state Assemblyman Todd Gloria and community advocate Tasha Williamson among the better known candidates in the field.
The primary is next March 3.
