Red Cross Appeals For Funds For Disaster in East
Southwestern Jewish Press, September 2, 1955, Page 1

Mr. Henry J. Price, disaster chairman for the San Diego County Chapter, American National Red Cross, asked that everyone contribute to the fund for flood sufferers in the eastern areas of the United States.  Over $8,000,000 will be needed for rehabilitation of the 35,000 families who have been affected.

San Diego County Chapter has assumed a quota of $50,000 as its share.

Quoting President Eisenhower, Mr. Price went on to say that “Everyone would sleep better tonight if they contributed to the best of their ability before nightfall.”

In explaining the nature of the Red Cross disaster relief effort, Mr. Price pointed out that there is frequent misunderstanding on the part of people who think that those made destitute by disaster can obtain direct grants from Federal Funds allocated for disaster relief.  “This is not the case,” he said, “since under the law, families cannot be assisted by the government directly. Certain public funds are made available on a loan basis to families and business firms, and generally, public funds, whether federal or state are used to repair damage to roads, bridges and public property. The individual family in need must look to Red Cross.”

Southwestern Jewish Press, September 2, 1955, Page 3

“South Pacific” which opened an 11-night run in Balboa Park Bowl last night, at 8:30 promises to be the greatest stage attraction ever staged in San Diego.  Advance reservations are even running ahead of last season’s record-breaking “Oklahoma!” which drew more than 40,000 to the bowl in 11 nights.  However, the box office reports there are still good seats for all nights with particularly choice seats for the three extra nights, September 5, 6, and 7 for which no season reservations were accepted.

The cast, headed by John Powell and Jean Hermes, includes such other Star-Light favorites as: Maxine Edwards, Charlie Cannon, Earl Cantos, F. Allen Richardson and Bobby Finch.  Making their bows as Polynesians are Irene Valencia, Jinx Palma and Stevie Granados.  The singing and dancing company has also been picked with great care to do full justice to this fabulous Rodgers and Hammerstein hit.

Well known songs from the score include: “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,” “A Cockeyed Optimist,” “I’m in Love with a Wonderful Guy,” “Younger than Springtime,” “There is Nothing Like a Dame” and Powell’s two big songs: “Some Enchanted Evening” and “This Nerly Was Mine.”
