, November 25, 1955, Page 1

With the stepping up of Arab hostility against the State of Israel it becomes increasingly important that this near East outpost of democracy remain strong.  The San Diego Jewish Community recognizing the challenge before it, is assuming its obligation by extending its hand in fellowship to their beleaguered brothers.

Mr. M.D. Goodrich, Israel bond chairman, indicated that the dinner on Sunday, Dec. 11, will show an outpouring of investment capital through purchase of Israel bonds, will demonstrate once and for all that the San Diego Jewry knows that if Israel is to remain strong militarily, she must survive economically.

Co-chairman Abe Abramson promised that the dinner on Dec. 11th at 6:30 p.m. “an internationally famous person would report on the current Arab-Israel situation so that an informed San Diego Jewry will respond in a most magnificent manner—By the purchase of Bonds.”

Jewish Organizations Oppose Teaching Religion In Schools
Southwestern Jewish Press, November 25, 1955, Page 1

Opposition to public school teaching of so-called “moral and spiritual values” or of a “common core” of religious beliefs, or the “factual” or “objective” teaching of religion, was expressed in a joint statement of policy issued Sunday by the national rabbinic and congregational bodies of Reform, Conservative and Orthodox Judaism and a number of national Jewish civic bodies and Jewish community councils.

The statement was approved by the Synagogue Council of America and the National Community Relations Advisory Council, and released by the latter. A total of 43 Jewish organizations are represented by these two coordinating bodies.

In an “Affirmation of Principle,” the forty-three Jewish organizations assert:

“We are deeply concerned with religious education and are making every effort to bring religious training to our children, in consonance with the principle that the maintenance and furtherance of religion are the responsibility of home, synagogue and church, and not of the public school.”

The basic law of the United States, the affirmation continues, “puts religion outside the jurisdiction of the state.  Any impairment of that principle threatens religious liberty and brings other basic freedoms into jeopardy.”

Small World Dept – In 1949, during her residency in Brussels, Belgium, Mrs. David  Zwanzinger purchased some hosiery in a small Brussels shop. The proprietor  recognized her American accent and mentioned that he had a sister in the United States, living in San Diego.  Mrs. Zwanzinger said that she came from New York City but her uncle, Louis Moorsteen, lived in San Diego. Upon her return from Europe, Mrs. Zwanzinger moved to this city.  In reading the personals in our last issue about the recent arrival of Marcel Guzower from Brussels, the name sounded familiar and Mrs. Zwanzinger checked.  You guessed it, Mr. Guzower was the friendly merchant in Brussels.
