Jeff Schindler Tells His Priorities as New Chair of Jewish Federation of San Diego

July 18, 2025

By Jeff Schindler

SAN DIEGO — It is with deep gratitude and an even deeper sense of responsibility that I write to you today as the new Chair of the Board of Jewish Federation of San Diego.

As the son of Holocaust Survivors, Rose and Max Schindler (z”l), I was born and raised in this amazing community, a place where my parents were able to build new lives after unimaginable loss; a place where their legacy and our family’s story continues to unfold. My parents survived the worst of humanity and lived their lives with courage, passion, energy, hope, and an unwavering belief in the power of community. They knew what we could achieve when we dedicate ourselves to each other and to building a brighter future for all our children and the generations to come. That spirit guides everything I do.

That is why this work and my service with Federation is so important to me—Federation is where memory meets mission, and where we honor the past while building for the future.

As Chair, my focus will be on expanding Holocaust education through The Goldberg Center for Holocaust Education, launching a new mobile museum and classroom to reach every corner of our San Diego region, furthering our work to combat antisemitism through coalition and community, and developing the next generation of local Jewish leaders. As we do this sacred work, we will also advocate for the essential things we stand for. At Federation, we stand for a great deal, most importantly, the dignity of our people.

This weekend, Federation is proud to be an active partner in San Diego’s JPride weekend. As Rabbi Sharon Brous reminds us, “Joy is an act of spiritual resistance.” At a time when hate and hostility feel louder than ever, we are choosing something different. We are choosing to lead with PRIDE, with compassion, and with a deep sense of unity. Rather than be defined by exclusion or division, our Jewish community across San Diego County is coming together to create something new-a space that uplifts LGBTQ+ Jews and our community allies. A space where LGBTQ+ Jews do not have to hide their love for Israel or their identity as proud Zionists. A space filled with joy, celebration, and connection. A space where everyone can feel seen, safe, and proud. This is not just a reaction; it’s a declaration. We believe in showing up not in anger, but in purpose. Not to retreat, but to rejoice. We are creating a celebration that honors who we are, the values we hold, and the future we are all building together.

As we move forward into Pride weekend and the work that lies ahead, I sincerely hope you will join us. Be our partner in building a brighter future for generations to come, and a vibrant today where we can live our Jewish lives out loud—with nachas (pride and joy).

Thank you for the privilege and honor of serving this extraordinary community. I look forward to working together with you all in the weeks, months, and years ahead.
