Jewish Center Group Seeks $150,000 for Building
Southwestern Jewish Press, August 23, 1957, Page 1

The Executive Committee of the Jewish Community Center reported the need for an additional $150,000 in cash in order to be completely ready for the opening of the new Jewish Community Center building on April 1, 1958, according to William B. Schwartz, Center President.

Though part of the necessary money is available in pledges which were made three years ago and partially paid, Schwartz stated that the money is planned to be raised in a “Center completion campaign,” which it is hoped will be held immediately after the United Success Drive of the Community Chest.

The announcement made by Schwartz marks the culmination of more than five years of painstaking work by the committee which has been climaxed by the actual construction of the building and the swimming pool. The $150,000 to be asked for from the Jewish community of San Diego will cover costs of the swimming pool, which is now under construction, furnishings and equipment for the building and playground, landscaping, and payment of contractor’s fees, architect’s fee, and consultation fee to the Jewish Welfare Board’s architectural service The balance of the money needed is caused by a 20% increase in costs of building since the plans for the new Community Center were begun.

Already in process is the formation of the Campaign Committee, which will be announced shortly, and the campaign procedure.

Total estimate cost of this phase of the Center is $600,000, Maury Novak and Sidney Rose of the Building Committee, reported.

Feldman urges all Jewish families to make it a practice to open their homes to practice to open their homes to servicemen, especially on Friday nights and over the weekends.
