Jewish Scientist Who Inherited Jonas Salk’s Office Unlocks Secrets of Hormones

Evans works in a laboratory bequeathed to him by his colleague and mentor, the late discoverer of the polio vaccine, Jonas Salk. In one research project, Evans and his team studied the impact of exercise on a body’s genetic makeup. They found that exercise will activate a cascade of genes that prompt the body to produce a chemical form of energy known at ATP (adenosine triphosphate). [Donald H. Harrison]

22 Youths at Congregation Beth Israel Earn Presidential Volunteer Service Awards

In a letter to each youth, Biden wrote: “The American story depends not on any one of us, not on some of us, but on all of us. I congratulate you on taking it upon yourself to contribute to the public good … Throughout our country’s history, the American story has been strengthened by those who combine an optimism about what can be with the resilience to turn that vision into reality. Secure Community Network’s Bill Ganley Describes Services to Jewish Community

In an interview, Ganley drew upon two nautical analogies to deliver the message that members of Jewish institutions should continually train themselves to counter threats. “When does the Navy stop painting a ship?” he asks rhetorically. “Never,” he answered. “We have to approach training the same way.  Repetition builds muscle memory.” The same might be said about reading the Torah.  As soon as we finish reading the concluding fifth book, Deuteronomy, we immediately begin again reading the first book, Genesis, so that the cycle of learning never ends. Jewish Sleep Researcher Links Sleep Apnea and Alzheimer’s Symptoms

Even though she soon became a member of the UC San Diego faculty, Israel continued to work from the V.A., where she had access not only to that desk and phone, but also to a sleep laboratory, which then consisted of two rooms. In one, the patient was hooked up to a polysomnogram (PSG) with electrodes placed to monitor movements of the head, eyes, chin, and legs. While the patient slept, “you record heart rate, respiration, leg movement, oxygenation – those re the basics,” Israel said. “Often there is a video recording as well and we look for any unusual movements.” [Donald H.
