January 6 was the worst and best of times

Because of the disruptions and criminal trespass at the Capitol by a mob of President Trump’s supporters, some may be tempted to remember January 6, 2021, as one of the worst days for American democracy.   And they would be right!  Our coverage may be found in companion articles about the demonstration that turned violent and forced postponement of the counting of the Electoral College votes by a joint session of Congress. Ironically, January 6, 2021, also was one of American democracy’s best days because it demonstrated that racism and anti-Semitism, at least in the halls of government and in the polling places of Georgia, are on the wane.  Furthermore, the value that Americans place on racial and religious diversity is on full display. Guilty plea in Goldstein case raises many questions

Every time there’s a new development in the unfolding fraud cases against disgraced Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein of Chabad of Poway and his associates, even more questions seem to arise. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported this morning that Rotem Cooper, 54, had pleaded guilty in federal court to charges that he made fake contributions to the Friendship Circle, an organization created by Goldstein to reach out to people with developmental disabilities.  But, Goldstein returned 90 percent of the contribution back to Cooper, while certifying the full amount had been donated for tax purposes.  Cooper’s “contribution” triggered a matching contribution from Qualcomm, where he worked as an engineering manager, which Goldstein then split with someone named “Y.H,” who is described as “the director of a religious congregation and community organization located in San Diego.” [Donald H. Mirroring the negative advertising campaigns  in Georgia criticizing the opponents of the candidates they favor, Christians United for Israel issued a press release rebuking Rev. Raphael Warnock, a Democrat, for anti-Israel statements he made in the past (but which he has since recanted), while Rep. Adam Schiff (D-California) blasted Warnock’s opponent,  U.S. Sen. Kelly Loeffler, for selling millions of dollars in personal stocks before news of the impacts of the COVID pandemic were generally known by the public. [Donald H. Harrison]
