Hezbollah Fires 19 Rockets from Lebanon at Israel

Hezbollah’s decision to fire 19 rockets at northern Israel on Friday came after the Lebanese terror organization took 24 hours to deliberate over a major dilemma: How should it respond to Israeli airstrikes in Southern Lebanon, launched early on Thursday morning? The Israeli strikes targeted a Lebanese area that was used on Wednesday by a Palestinian terror faction to fire three Grad rockets at the Israeli northern town of Kiryat Shmona. The Israel Air Force also hit what it described as “infrastructure used for terror in Lebanon” and areas used by Palestinian factions to fire on Israel in the past as well. [JNS.org]

ADL Slams Facebook for Censoring Researchers Studying FB’s Impact on Hate

ADL (the Anti-Defamation League) on Friday condemned Facebook for shutting down the work of two researchers who were studying how misinformation spreads through political ads on Facebook, and demands that the company immediately restore these researchers’ accounts and access to the data they require. Earlier this week, Facebook shut down the work of Laura Edelson and Damon McCoy, two researchers at New York University, who were studying the flow of political misinformation on the platform. The NYU researchers’ initial findings were alarming, showing how ads can use Facebook to manipulate voters and how the company’s algorithms spread partisan misinformation. [ADL News Release]

Remembrance of a Covid Wedding

By the time Dr. and Mrs. Bernardo Stein of Seminole, Florida, and Mr. and Mrs. David Abelson of Oldsmar, Florida, had finished the guest list for the wedding of their children, the number had mushroomed well past 400. By the time Arlyn Stein and Adam Abelson walked down the aisle last Dec. 19, the list of “guests” had shrunk to, well, zero. The entire wedding party consisted of the bride and groom, their parents, three siblings and two grandparents. Oh, and Cooper, their 10-month-old mini-poodle. [Bruce F. Lowitt]

European Court: Take Jewish Child Off Life Support

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rejected an appeal by the parents of a brain-damaged Jewish child trying to stop a hospital from withdrawing their daughter’s life support, reported the BBC. ECHR upheld a British court’s ruling in May that it was in the “best interests” of 2-year-old Alta Fixsler to withdraw life-support treatment, supporting an earlier decision by the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust that “there was no prospect of her ever getting better.” ECHR said it agreed with the previous decision to place the toddler on palliative care.
