Goldie Schusterman Honored At Testimonial Dinner by Birdie Stodel

On Sunday, February 12, Birdie Stodel B’nai B’rith Auxiliary will give a Testimonial Dinner at the Mission Valley Country Club in honor of Mrs. Goldie Schusterman.

Mrs. Schusterman has served unselfishly for the past sixteen years and is well known for her many humanitarian interests in the community.

Out-of-town guests to share the tribute will be Gracie Allen and George Burns (brother of Mrs. Schusterman) and their children, MRs. J. Wilhoite (Sandy Burns), Ronnie Burns, their teenager son of the program, and Mr. and Mrs. William Burns.

Benediction will be given by Rabbi Baruch Stern. A short skit depicting the many activities of Mrs. Schusterman will be followed by soloist Mrs. Louis Sosna, accompanied by Mrs. Niel Himmel, and outstanding Hollywood talent.

A memorable event is promised by Cbairman Mrs. Harry Schwartz and Co-Chairman Mmes Jeremiah Aronoff and Morrie Kraus, assisting committee, Mmes. Wm. Organizations Asked To Clear Calendars

Morris W. Douglas, President of the United Jewish Fund of San Diego County, and Dr. A.P. Nasatir, President of the San Diego Federation of Jewish Agencies, this week appeal to Jewish organizations to arrange their calendar of activities during March, April and May to give priority to the United Jewish Fund Campaign activities.

Douglas and Nasatir in a joint statement said “Ours is a community effort in behalf of local, national and overseas welfare agencies of the utmost importance to the Jewish Community and elsewhere.  By avoiding any major functions during these months which calls for community wide publicity or mass attendance you will be helping your United Jewish Fund leadership immeasurably in meeting the responsibilities which they have voluntarily assumed.”

“If there is an doubt in your mind as to which o fyour organizations activities during March, April and May conflict with the United Jewish Fund campaign please call our office at BE -5172,” he concluded.

Temple SisterHood to Hear Three Rabbis

Mrs. Irving Hertz, president of Temple Beth Israel Sisterhood, will welcome three rabbis to the February luncheon-meeting of the organization, to be held on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 11:45 a.m. in the Temple Center.  Joining Rabbi Morton J. Cohn of Temple Beth Israel in preenting the program, a panel discussion on an “important and controversial subject in American-Jewish community life” will be Rabbi Bernard Harrison and Rabbi Isaiah Zeldin.

Rabbi Harrison of Temple Emanuel, Beverly Hills, recently was elected President of the Western Association of Reform Rabbis.

Rabbi Zeldin is the West Coast Director of the Union of American Hebrew Colleges, and is also the Dean of the Los Angeles branch of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.

Luncheon Captains are Mrs. Henry Mendell and Mrs. Rose Hillman.

Visits Here Feb. 7th

Adlai Stevenson will make his first visit to San Diego in three years n Tuesday, Feb. 7th.  He will be honored at a reception in Conference Hall, Balboa Park, at 7:45 p.m. that evening and will speak at 8:30.

Myron Lustig is liaison chairman; Mrs. Manuel Haffner, refreshment chairman; and Harry Farb is finance chairman of the affair.

The Democratic presidential candidate told his San Diego committee: “I  would like to meet and shake hands with as many San Diegans as possible at the reception. Will you please relay to the people of San Diego an invitation that they attend?”

More than 300 cakes will be home baked by Democratic women, called by Mrs. Haffner and her committee.  These, and coffee, will be served to all who attend the reception, compliments of the Democratic clubs of San Diego County.

Jr. Charity League Holds Annual Party

The Junior Charity League will hold its annual card party this year on Wednesday, Feb. 29tgh.  It will be in the form of a luncheon, carrying out a Spring motif at the Temple Center, Third and Laurel.  Mrs. Nathan Smollar and Mrs. Harry Stone are co-chairmen for the event.

Everything will be home-cooked, of course, with a home-made cake sale to follow the luncheon. All proceeds from ticket sales will go, as usual, to the Police Fund.  Proceeds from cakes will go to aid San Diego’s retarded children.

At a recent meeting of the club, Dr. Irving Stone spoke and showed moving pictures of the new school established in Mission Valley for retarded children.  Members then voted to join the Association and to aid the school in whatever way it could.

Mrs. Sam Sosna, President, invites everyone to join the League for an enjoyable afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Louis Addleson celebrated their 50th anniversary by sponsoring a fundraising affair for the City of Hope at Beth Jacob Center on Jan. 25th.  Mr. Aronoff chaired the event.

Before taking off for Apple Valley and Las Vegas last week, Nan and Nat Schiller entertained with a family dinner at the Bahia in honor of a double event… the fourth birthday of their grandson, Russell Babbitz and the 40th anniversary of their marriage. Singing waiters added to the festivities.

Mr. Harold Rosenbaum left Sunday on a flying trip which will take him through practically every state in the Union.

Mrs. Betty Babbitz of Sioux City, Iowa, will be the houseguest of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Babbitz. She will see her grandson, David, 17 months old, for the first time.

Mrs. Lash Bloch, of Denver, Colo, is a houseguest of Dr. and Mrs. Abe Nasatir.  Mrs. Bloch was a childhood friend of Henry Weinberger and a cousin of Sam Goldman, of San Diego.

Rosa Lee Rothblatt, wife of Dr. Harold D. Rothblatt, recently completed a 7 week television series with the San Diego State College Speech Correction Dept.  Mrs. Rothblatt received her degree in speech correction from the University of Illinois.

Mr. M.S. Berlin has been elected to the National Council of the Joint Distribution Committee at its recently held annual meeting in New York.

25 of her friends and grandmother Esther Starr were on hand at the Mission Valley Country Club, on January 27th, to surprise Andrea Leeds.  The dinner party was given by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Leeds, in hoor of her sixteenth birthday. The décor was appropriately in pink and white.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert A. Doctor extend an invitation to their friends to attend the Bar Mitzvah of their son, Bartley, on Saturday, Feb. 11, 9:30 a.m. at the Tifereth Israel Synagogue.

A reception will follow the services. Bartley will conduct the Friday night services on February 10th.

Tifereth Sisterhood Has C9unt as Guest

Mrs. Max Zemen, Program Chairman, announces that the Tifereth Israel Sisterhood is planning a luncheon and Brotherhood program for Tuesday, February 14th.  Luncheon chairmen will be Mesdames Monroe Levens, Joseph Kader, and Sidney Naliboff.

As one of their guests, they are presenting Count Palle Holstein of Copenhagen, Denmark. The Count received an exchange visitor’s visa for improving the international understanding between the United States and the Scandinavian countries. Count Holstein will show a Danish film entitled “Welcome to Denmark.”  He is an honorary member of the Danish Association here, and hopes to make San Diego his home.

The Public is invited to attend the luncheon and program.

At the next regular hotel luncheon meeting on Tuesday, February 7, Council will present a play “The Room Upstairs” by Nora Stirling. Advisor will be Dr. Allen D. Rosenblatt, a San Diego psychoanalyst. The play will be directed by Mrs. Robt. Drexler and the cast includes Bebe Kaplan, Ruth Reznikoff, Hilda Smith and Eugene Sachs.  Reservations may be made through Mrs. Fritz Lavender, JU 2-0867.

The Edgemoor Farm project will be highlighted at this meeting and handicrafts produced by the residents will be displayed for sale.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur H. Goodman announce the brith of a son, Arthur Harold, Jr., on Tuesday, January 17.  Weight 7 1/s lbs. The Goodmans have two girls Claudia, 4 ½ years and Pamela, 19 months.

A new addition to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Baumgarten is Eileen Ann, who joined her sister Debbie, 14 months old, on January 4th.  Eileen weighed 8 lbs ¼ oz. at birth.

Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Feinberg of San Diego. Greatgrandmothers are Mrs. H. Flaschbinder of Los Angeles and Bertha Feinberg of San Diego.
