Weinberger Lodge Elects New Officers

At the last meeting of the Weinberger Lodge the following officers were elected: “Pres. Sam Bennett; 1st Vice-Pres, Marshall Zucker; 2nd V.P., Lou Levitt; 34d V.P, Howard Harris; Treas., Joe Feldman; Corr. Sec. Irwin Gostin; Fin. Sec. Larry Rubenstein; Warden, Herb Solomon; Guardian, Dr. Seymour Okmin; Trustees: Al Kaye, Joe Goldberg, Al Perper, Sid Rose, Morrie Wax and Art Levy.  The installation of officers will be held on January 19 at the Hotel San Diego. At the meeting past presidents dating back to 1922 were in attendance.  Jack Spatz and Joe Kaplan were awarded the title of Past President, Joe in view of his past ten years service to the lodge and Jack by affiliation.

Abe Sklar, lucky winner of the fabulous, 27-day European trip for two, will leave in April with Mrs. Sklar, to attend the 10th Anniversary celebration in Israel.

Nomination and election of officers for 1958 will take place on Tuesday, 17th, at the Beth Jacob Center, at 1 p.m.  A non-profit luncheon will be served at 12 noon.

Senior Citizens

Senior citizens will celebrate the beginning of the Chanukah season with a party on Tuesday, December 17, 1 p.m.at the Jewish Community Center.  Miss Sonia Weitzman will entertain with a group of Israeli and Chanukah songs.

Mrs. Theodore Hermann, program chairman, states that cards, games with prizes, and refreshments will add to the festivities.  Guests celebrating birthdays during December will be accorded special honors.

According to Mrs. Herbert Malley, General Chairman, the party is open to all who wish to attend.    There is no charge and reservations are not necessary.

Daughters of Israel

On November 29 the newly elected officers of the Daughters of Israel were installed by Rabbi Monroe Levens, assisted by Pearl Shulack. Outgoing president, Anna Lansky, received a tribute and a gift from the members for her outstanding service.  Mr. Irving Goodman, President of the Synagogue, delivered an inspiring talk on the contribution of the Daughters of Israel to the Synagogue for almost half a century.

A reception was held following the installation.

B’nai B’rith Girls

B’nai B’rith Girls held their first installation of officers at a dinner at the Lafayette Hotel on December 2.  Officers installed were: Hannah Jo Schwartz, Pres.; Elaine Kluchin, V-Pres.; Toby Kraus, Corr. Secy; Linda Goldfarb, Rec. Secy.; June Persky, Treas.; and Susan Cheron, Sgt. At Arms.

Entertainment was provided by July Lukin, who played the piano and also accompanied a quartet singing the B’nai B’rith song.  Shelia Gibson acted as Mistress of Ceemonies.

Dave Levy, 78, a resident o San Diego for thirty-seven years, died on December 8.

He is survived by his wife, Jennie, a son, Dr. Edward Levy of san Diego, and daughter, Mrs. Elmer Glaser of Oceanside.  Services were held at the Benbough Mortuary on December 10 with Rabbi Morton J. Cohn officiating.  Entombment, Greenwood Mausoleum.  Mr. Levy was a member of the Temple Beth Israel.

Jr. Hostesses Play Important Role

Nine Junior Hostesses of the Jewish Welfare Board Armed Services Committee participated in two successful social events recently.

On Saturday night, November 30th, they were guests at a Navy Ball aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Hornet. The girls who represented the organization at the affair were Judy Aved, Rhoda Cohn, Georgette Lesser, Robin McStroul, Nadine Polotkin, Rosalyn Steffel, Jan Tappan, Charlene Solomon and Barbara Ziffrin.

They were accompanied by Sr. Sponsors Rae Katz and Claire Kaplan.

On Sunday, December 8, Georgette Lesser, Robin McStroul, Jan Tappan and Barbara Ziffrin, supervised by Mr. and Mrs. Dorie Kellner, helped in bringing a pleasant surprise to the boys at the Naval Training Center in the form of a /Bagel & Lox Brunch.

Future events being planned will see more activities for our Junior Hostesses. Girls interested may call Mrs. Joseph Kaplan at AT-2-5136.

Mrs. Harold Lehrer, Chairman of the Pre-Teen Committee of the Jewish Community Center, announced the formation of two significant programs for the children between the ages of 5-11.  They include the Winter Day Camp Program and an after school craft program at the Hebrew Home for the Aged.

Beginning Monday, Dec. 23rd, the Center will sponsor an eight-day winter vacation Day Camp program. The program will include swim parties, roller skating, special trips to the shores for fishing, fossil and rock hunting expeditions, cook outs, athletics, arts and crafts, New Year’s Day Party, and other activities.  Highlight of the eight day program will be an all-day Chanukah Party that will include a Latke Party and a Maccabiyad.  The Camp will be unable to provide pick-up transportation and parents are asked to arrange car pools for the eight days. The Camp will assemble at the Center every morning at 9:30 a.m. to begin its programs.  Camp will be dismissed at the Center site at 4:00 p.m.

The cost for the camp program will be $21.00—no additional fees will be added for cookouts, trips, etc.  A special reduction will be made for parents enrolling 2 or more children.  The staff will include Dave Anfanger, Irwin Demberg, Elsimae Cleeton, Susan Menconi, June Persky, and others.

An after-school crafts program has been established at the Hebrew Home for the Aged on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Classes have been established for the children based upon their age and experience.  Children between the ages of 6-8 may be interested in the following schedule:

Monday—Art Class … work with charcoal, pastels, water color, and other art media.

Thursday—Craft Class … instruction in clay, leather, metal, etc.

Children between the ages of 9 and 11 may be interested in the following sechedule:

Monday—Craft Class … instruction with metal, paraffin, ceramics, leather, etc.

Thursday—Art Class .. instruction with the medias listed above, with the intent to help children to work with oils.

An equipment charge of 43.00 for the Craft Classes and $5.00 for the Art Classes are projected.  Mrs. Ted Hermann instructs the Craft Classes, and MR. Stan Levine teaches the Art Class.

Mrs. Glen Karel, Chairman of the Tween Committee of the Jewish Community Center, announced that the Center Tween Group will be leaving for their Third Annual Winter Vacation Camping Trip on Monday morning, December 23rd.  The Tweens under the direction of Mrs. Bob (Harriet) Miller, will be camping at Whispering Pines in Julian for five days and four nights.  Hiking, dancing, songs, arts and crafts, campfire programs, star gazing, nature walks, are only some of the interesting activities planned by the tweens for themselves. Other staff members will include Herb Gross, Barbara Belovin (who will double as Camp Nurse), Marty Friedman, Ronny Baranov, and Susan Miller.  The latter three will work in the capacity of Junior Counselors.

The Tween Campers include: Jerry Ramson, Paul Dean, Jeff Bennett, Louis Adler, Earl Feldman, Ned Gitline, Mark Mann, Mike Roberts, Dave Kelper, Gary Leeds, Bruce Jaffe, Bob Abelson, Ralph Lindenberg, Teri Shulkind, Ellen Okin, Grace Wagner, Linda Karel, Carol Freedman, Mitzi Kaye, Susan Masliah, Roberta Baranov, Lonnie Kane, Miriam Wolf, Nadine Belovin and Nellie Ross.

Young Adults Plan Latke Party – All young and single adults are invited to a Chanukah Latke Party the Singletons and the Jewish Center are planning on Sunday, Dec. 15th, at Tifereth Israel Synagogue.  The food will be prepared by a Committee headed by Frank Kaplan and Roz Goodwin and served complete with apple sauce and/ or sour cream at 7:30 p.m.  An evening of dancing will follow.

Colt Says ‘Let Uncle Sam Pay Part of U.J.F. Pledge’

“Federal taxes are geared to giving,” William Colt, Treasurer at the United Jewish Fund, reminded contributors to the 1957 Fund campaign who have not as yet completed their payments.

He urged payment of pledges before December 31 so that contributors may take their income tax deduction up to 20 percent.

Besides having “Uncle Sam” pay part of your gift, Colt pointed out that the United Jewish Appeal has asked for $30,000,000 in cash now to keep the stream of migration to Israel flowing.

Pledges should be paid at the office of the United Jewish Fund, 333 Plaza.

Fox Lodge News

On Sunday, December 22, the Samuel I. Fox Lodge will serve a Lox and Bagel breakfast as the Naval Training Center, according to Stan Yukon, chairman.

At the last meeting new officers for 1958 were elected and will be installed on Sunday, January 28, 1958, at a dinner.  A very entertaining program has been arranged for this event. Brother Yukon will be the chef for this dinner, which will cost $2.50 per plate.  Every effort should be made to enlarge the membership for the new year.

New Jewish Center Formed in Chula Vista

Recently formed and rapidly progressing is the new Chula Vista Jewish center.  The first Sunday School class started December 1st.  Classes were supervised according to age groups by accredited instructors and accredited Hebrew teachers.  An adult group meets the first and third Wednesday of every month.  The group at present is discussing Jewish customs and ceremonies.

At a general meeting of the Chula Vista Jewish Center, officers were elected. The following are: President and Madame President, Dr. and Mrs. Milton Lincoff; Secretary, Mr. and MRs. David Tobias; Treasurer, Dr. and Mrs. David Epstein; Telephone Committee, Mrs. Sam Vener; Program Committee, Mrs. Eugene Sacks, Publicity Chairman, Mrs. Fred Baker; Sunday School Coordinator, Mrs. Sidney Cornell.

Mr. Sam Dimenstein is principal of the religious school. In addition, Mr. Dimenstein is conducting the adult study group of the Chula Vista Jewish Cnter

A Chanukah party is being planned at the home of Mr. and Mrs. David Tobias.

Mr. and Mrs. Hadassah invites all “young marrieds” to join them tomorrow night, December 14, 8 p.m., at Tifereth Israel for the second annual Chanukah party.  The price is $1.25 per person and includes food, games, and a chance for a big prize.

Reports from the Program Committee are really exciting about the New Year’s Eve Dinner-Dance.  IT will be held at the La Jollan Hotel “Den.”  There will be an hors d’ouevre hour with all the trimmings, and dancing till 1 a.m.  The price, $18,00.  However, reservations will be limited.  Insure spending a wonderful New Year’s eve with your friends at y our own private party by sending a $16.00 deposit to Lou Packer, 6892 Glenroy.

The members of the community are invited to attend a luncheon to be held at the YWCA, 10th and C ST., Tuesday, December 17th at 12 Noon.

The Jewish Group of the Y’s International Club are sponsoring the luncheon. Mrs. Ernest Haas, who is in charge of the luncheon, will use a Chanukah theme.
