“With the rates of smartphone theft reaching new heights in many cities across California and the nation, we are faced with the clear choice of making our smartphones less attractive to thieves,” said Senator Leno, D-San Francisco. “The only way to stop the victimization of innocent cell phone customers is to enable theft-deterrent technology on nearly every new smartphone sold in California, which this legislation will do. This proposal has universal support from statewide law enforcement groups and many wireless industry companies have dropped their opposition to the bill, giving further evidence to the need for, and fact of, a solution to this crime of convenience.”
