AMMAN, Jordan (Press Release)– U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Florida), Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, and Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Florida), Ranking Member of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, issued the following statement after visiting with King Abdullah II of Jordan and touring a refugee camp for Syrians who fled the war in their country.. Ros-Lehtinen and Deutch are visiting Jordan and Israel as part of a fact finding trip to get firsthand accounts of how the instability in the Middle East is affecting regional allies and U.S. national security interests.

Statement by Ros-Lehtinen: “Amid growing instability and threats emanating from the Middle East, this visit to Jordan has allowed us to witness firsthand how Jordan has gone above and beyond, taking in over 600,000 registered refugees, despite the strain this influx has put on its economy and its resources. It is imperative that the United States and other responsible nations continue to support Jordan with the humanitarian and security assistance to address the Syrian conflict. We also addressed the dangerous and deteriorating situation in Iraq and the terrorist safe haven that is being created there. The United States Congress will continue to cooperate with Jordan to keep the Kingdom secure and stable, and advocate stronger bonds in the region seeking peace and stability, including with the democratic Jewish State of Israel.”

Statement by Deutch: “As we continue to confront growing regional challenges, including the threats posed by the rise of Islamic extremist groups in Iraq and the ongoing Syrian refugee and humanitarian crisis, Jordan remains a stable, reliable partner. The United States must work with the international community to support Jordan as it supports over 650,000 Syrian refugees. We welcomed the opportunity to discuss with the King these and other issues including our continued support for a strong and secure state of Israel.”
