The Chagim bring interesting experiences

Donald H. Harrison
A Rosh Hashanah message, California road style

SAN DIEGO – The chagim are a time of interesting experiences, both unscheduled and planned.  An example of the former occurred on Rosh Hashanah while Stacie Bresler-Reinstein and her son Miles Reinstein saw his Hebrew name boldly written on a rear window of a car ahead of them along with the question, “Who is like God.”  Who indeed?

Examples of interesting scheduled moments include such experiences as Klezmer musician Yale Strom performing Kol Nidre at services at 6 p.m. sharp Tuesday night at Temple Beth Shalom, 208 Madrona Street in Chula Vista.   Later in the month,  Tifereth Israel Synagogue will serve a vegetarian meal in its sukkah following 6:15 p.m. services on Friday, Oct. 18, that will be led by the Conservative congregation’s Shir Chadash band.  The dinner by Good Taste Catering will include “winter squash-a-palooza” of kabocha, spaghetti, acorn squah and grains; a fall salad, garnet yams with pears, goat cheese, and toasted walnuts, and a cranberry orange tart.  The fare for adults is $22; and for youth, 6-11, who will have a separate menu $10.  Reservations may be made via this website.

Political bytes

Cory Briggs

Cory Briggs, a candidate for San Diego city attorney, has issued a criticism of incumbent Mara Elliott, saying she has promoted government waste, government secrecy, and incompetent law enforcement oversight. He said she approved bypassing the city council on a $2 million contract; advised city officials not to disclose employees’ public phone numbers; and failed to insist that the San Diego Police Department test every rape kit. … Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez has endorsed San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez for the 53rd Congressional District seat from which Susan Davis is retiring.
