SAN DIEGO — This Shabbat, throughout the Jewish world, is known as Shabbat Shirah, the Shabbat of Song. That is because in our Torah portion this week, BeShalach, we read about how Miriam led the Israelites in a song,

Shirat HaYam, as they traveled through the split sea. The song itself is a beautiful poem. It talks about resilience, strength, and perseverance, and how with the help of God, mountains can be moved, oceans can be split, anything is possible. But, our experience when reading is greatly enhanced by the special trope, a unique and uplifting melody, which we chant it in.
According to a Midrash, one of Miriam’s very special gifts was her ability to inspire the Israelites through music. The Song of the Sea reminds us not only of Miriam’s talents as a leader, but of the power of music; when used effectively music can be moving, it can be inspiring, and it can touch people’s hearts.
At Tifereth Israel, there are many ways we try to harness the power of music to inspire, to engage, and to move people towards having more meaningful and engaging experiences. From Shir Chadash to Kol Tefillah services, or TICO to the Ukulele Class in our Torah School, music can be a very powerful tool to help us connect with one another, Jewish tradition, Jewish community, and God. As we celebrate Shabbat Shira together, we will continue to celebrate the important role that music plays in the fabric of our community. May we also continue to explore new ways to to employ music to move us, to inspire us, and help elevate us to new spiritual heights!
