Lawrence Family JCC Prepares for 2022 JCC Maccabi Games

LA JOLLA, California (Press Release)  –Todd Allen and Betzy Lynch, respectively the board chair and CEO of the Lawrence Family JCC, on Saturday evening, July 31, sent out the following letter announcing that the JCC Maccabi Games will be held in San Diego next year.  Here is the text of their letter:

Dear JCC Members, Family, and Friends,

The leadership of the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center JACOBS FAMILY CAMPUS is pleased to announce that 2022 will mark the return of the JCC Maccabi Games® after a two-year hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic. We couldn’t be more excited that in exactly one year from today, the Games will begin. Additionally, we are thrilled to be the pilot site for JCC Maccabi Access – giving Jewish teens with cognitive and developmental disabilities a meaningful and integrated JCC Maccabi experience. The 2022 JCC Maccabi Games® and Access, the largest organized Jewish teen sports experience in North America, will be hosted in San Diego from July 31 to August 5, 2022.

Next year also marks the 40th anniversary of the Games, a remarkable milestone for JCC Maccabi. Throughout the last four decades, the JCC Maccabi Games® have engaged more than 100,000 Jewish teens—impacting not only athletes’ lives, but also those of host families, volunteers, and dozens of host communities—and we are proud and delighted to bring this signature platform back to the JCC Movement next summer.

Reigniting the JCC Maccabi torch is only possible because of the tenacious leadership of our JCC Maccabi Co-Chairs, Kira Finkenberg, Adam Jacobs, and Larry Katz. Our professional staff, along with Kira, Adam, and Larry, thoughtfully engaged our continental partners at JCC Association in important conversations regarding health and safety protocols, security, finances and overall logistics. The results of these conversations are the beginning of an impressive framework that will lead us to a very successful event.

While we recognize and understand that the pandemic is not over, we want to embrace the opportunity to rally our community in this gigantic display of Jewish pride and belief in our Jewish future. These efforts will bring more Jewish teens and communities from across North America together for sporting experiences that—combined with Jewish cultural, social, social action, and leadership elements—will create deep, rich, and transformative experiences, inspiring and augmenting the Jewish journey of every person touched by JCC Maccabi.

We know that our community will want to share in the excitement to bring the JCC Maccabi Games® back to San Diego after 14 years. We are counting on you to roll up your sleeves to help Kira, Adam, and Larry make the Maccabi magic happen. More information about how to get involved will be shared in the coming weeks. In the interim, we encourage you to click here to indicate your areas of interest in participation.
