SAN DIEGO (Press Release) – The Jewish Federation of San Diego County and community partners will sponsor an annual community event to celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut on April 21 held at Nobel Athletic Field in the University City area. This is a free event to celebrate and educate our local community about Israel and its culture.
The entire San Diego Jewish community is participating, including Friendship Circle of San Diego, which will be kicking off the day with the annual Friendship Walk at 9AM to benefit children with special needs in San Diego and Israel. This year the Jewish Federation has partnered with many local organizations, synagogues and vendors to make this the best year yet. Last year there were more than 3,000 attendees and more are expected for this celebration of Israel’s 65th birthday.
The festival will include a hummus cook-off, free live music, entertainment, with local and special performances, Israeli folk dancing, a circus, kid’s activities, sports, teen programs, arts and crafts, games, a seniors club area, shopping and delicious kosher food! There will also be an opportunity drawing for two free tickets to Israel provided by El Al Airlines!

In the wake of the bombings on Monday at the Boston Marathon, the following statement was issued by Michael Sonduck, chief executive officer of the Jewish Federation of San Diego: “Security is always one of our most important concerns when we gather as a community. The Jewish Federation works closely with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) to assess security concerns and address them. Both ADL and SDPD have assured us that there are no known threats at this time. In collaboration with ADL and SDPD security for San Diego Celebrates Israel – Yom Haatzmaut security will be maintained at the necessary level.”
