WASHINGTON, D.C. (Press Release). — Reps. Steve Israel (D-New York) and Richard Hanna (R-New York) offered two bipartisan amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act of 2015 (NDAA) to recognize the critical role the National Guard plays in cyber defense efforts and to require them to submit a progress report within 90 days of the bill’s enactment on their creation of Cyber Protection Teams, which will be stationed throughout the country in order to prepare for and respond to cyber threats and attacks.
Rep. Israel said, “The National Guard has a pivotal role to play in both our nation’s protection against and response to cyber attacks. Rep. Hanna and I offered amendments to commend their hard work and to request a progress report on their efforts to create Cyber Protection Teams across the country. I look forward to continuing to work with the National Guard to keep New York and our nation safe.”
Rep. Hanna said, “Cyber attacks threaten our domestic infrastructure and will remain a constant and growing homeland security concern. I’m glad to join Rep. Israel in this continued work to promote our National Guard and the unique value it can provide to assist in this critical mission of defending against the threat of cyber attacks to our domestic infrastructure both here in New York and across the country.”
The NDAA passed the House by a vote of 325 to 98.
