WASHINGTON, D.C. (SDJW)–Before leaving for the Memorial Day Weekend break, some members of Congress issued statements honoring the sacrifices made by American troops.  Statements issued by Jewish members of Congress included the following:

Rep. Nita Lowey, D-N.Y.:  “This Memorial Day, we pay tribute to those brave service members who fought to protect the United States of America and made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom and democracy.  No one has given more to our country than the men and women who died in service to ensure that the American dream lives.

“As we pause today to remember our service members, let us also remember the sacrifices their families and friends make each and every day. For those whose loved ones will never return home, we salute you.

“The debt of gratitude for the service and sacrifice of fallen soldiers cannot be expressed in one day.  Let us remember those who never came home as well as their families who remain with us – not just on this Memorial Day, but throughout the year.  May their heroic acts be enshrined in our memories forever.”

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, chair of the Senate Veteran Affairs Committee: ““On this Memorial Day weekend, I want to thank all veterans who have put their lives on the line to defend our country and especially the families of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. On this solemn occasion, Congress must reaffirm its commitment to make sure that every veteran in this country and their families get the health care and other benefits that they have earned and deserve.

“During the past several years, we have made significant progress. We have expanded education and employment opportunities, reduced homelessness, improved the processing of claims for disability benefits and given new support for the caregivers of disabled veterans. In the coming year, I look forward to working with veterans all across the country and their representatives here in Washington as we redouble our commitment to the men and women who have given so much for our nation.”

Rep. John Yarmuth, D-Kentucky:  “There is no aspect of American life today that we don’t owe to the sacrifice of a soldier, a sailor, an airman, or a marine. On Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation — by remembering, by speaking our gratitude aloud, and by pledging to do more to support their brothers and sisters who have returned to us.”
