Documentary Intimately Records Eli Timoner’s Choice to End His Life

The heartbreaking loss of lives in the airplane crash resulted in Air Florida going into bankruptcy, and the stroke reduced Timoner’s earning capacity. He held on for nearly 40 years, but when congestive heart failure made him even more dependent on others, he decided that as a California resident he would take advantage of the Golden State’s “Right to Die” Law. The Jewish Eye: Outdoor Menorah; Banning Books; Gun Safety

Barry Soper, who has contributed to many political campaigns, now has political figures donating money to build a new, less destructible outdoor menorah at Chabad of San Diego State University, which is led by Rabbi Chalom Boudjnah.  Among contributors are the current and previous two San Diego County Assessors/ Clerks/ Recorders respectively Jordan Marks, Ernie Dronenburg, and Greg Smith.  The menorah, which symbolizes the Jewish hope to bring light into the world, has been vandalized on several occasions over the years.  Overseeing construction of a new one is Joshua Soper, son of Barry Soper. Ben-Gurion University Researcher and Colleagues Pen 10 Simple Rules for Socially Responsible Science

NEW YORK (Press Release) — Scientific research has to meet clear ethical guidelines to prevent harm to participants. However, research can also indirectly harm individuals and social groups, for example by shaping social perceptions and inspiring policy. Researchers receive little to no training on how to consider and minimize such harm. To that end, Ben-Gurion

Yom HaShoah Observances Held Throughout San Diego County

I toured Holocaust observances at various venues in San Diego County, starting on Tuesday with a visit to Seacrest Village Retirement Community in Encinitas.  Among the residents are Charlotte Marx, who is the oldest at 104; Debby Stauber, Marguerite Morris, and Lee Drasnin.  They watched a video that was presented at Sunday’s Yom HaShoah observance at the Lawrence Family JCC, and shared with me their ideas for Holocaust education, awareness, and a permanent Holocaust museum. Overcoming Two Decades of Opposition, UCSD’s Jewish Students Finally Have Their Hillel Center

Parry oversees Hillel operations at UC San Diego, San Digo State University, Cal State San Marcos, and the University of San Diego.  She recalled that while she was a Class of 2008 political science student at UC San Diego that the proposed center had been opposed for a long time by neighbors in La Jolla.  At least some of them were motivated by the same kind of antisemitism that delayed construction of an eruv by Congregation Adat Yeshurun.  With City Hall appeals, environmental reviews, and court battles, the opponents were successful delaying construction for 20 years, but eventually the courts gave Hillel the go-ahead to build on the land it had purchased. The Jewish Eye: Judiciary Committee and Judges in Focus

The Senate Judiciary Committee screens federal judicial candidates nominated by the President of the United States.  It was in the news this week, along with Justices of the Supreme Court and district court judges in Amarillo, Texas and New York City.  In San Diego, meanwhile, a Superior Court Judge was extolling the virtues of a courtroom dog. The Jewish Eye: Chronicling Public Activities of Jewish Community

As this column has evolved, a name change from “B’Shalom” to “The Jewish Eye” is in order.  My intent is to chronicle the participation of Jewish community members in such public activities as politics, science, the arts, sports, and business.  Formatting will consistently place stories under geographic rubrics such as “International,” “National,” “California,” and “San Diego County.”  Within those categories, the individuals will be listed alphabetically by surname.
