Torah for children: Pinchas

This week’s Torah Parasha, Pinchas, is all about family. We’ll start with a quick history lesson. In the first book of the Torah, we’re introduced to the families of several important people: 1) Abraham and his wife, Sarah, 2) their son, Isaac, who marries Rebecca, and 3) Isaac’s son Jacob. Jacob marries two women, which was okay back then, and winds up with twelve sons (and a daughter). It is the families of those twelve sons who appear, many years later, in this week’s reading. God is about to divide up the land among these different families. Moses is told to make a list of the different members of each family. This is such an important idea, that this entire parasha is mainly a listing of those names. (Marcia Berneger)

Torah lesson for children: Moses punished for acting angrily

Moses and Aaron leave to chat with God. They are given a rod and told to hold it up to a nearby rock, telling the people that God will provide water for them from that rock. What happens next is a surprise. Whether Moses is angry with the people for their constant complaining, or he isn’t quite sure if God will send the water flowing, or both, Moses strikes the rock and the water appears. Now God is the angry One. And the punishment for not following God’s directions is severe. Neither Moses nor Aaron will be allowed to go into the Promised Land of Israel. [Marcia Berneger]

Children’s Passover books worth buying now

Two sweet books from Kar Ben. Although we’re a little late for Passover, or a little early, depending on how you look at it, these tales are fun to read any time of the year. Each story highlights a different aspect of the holiday, but both books expose our youngest readers to the joys of Passover. The simple, rhyming text and engaging illustrations will delight toddlers while helping them understand more about this special holiday. [Marcia Berneger]

How students can respond to anti-Israel sentiment

The bulk of the [StandWithUs] presentation addressed the basic scenario of students being harassed or excluded from events because they are seen to be pro-Israel. Issues ranged from college professors openly advocating against Israel, to students being kept from marching with or supporting groups like Black Lives Matter because of their beliefs. Two spies who had faith and ten who didn’t

Moses chooses twelve men to slip into the city as spies. They’ll gather intel to see if the city is safe to conquer. Two spies, Joshua and Caleb, return with good news. “If God is on our side, we can take over the town.” Ten spies return, quivering and complaining. “There are giants in the town. We will lose everything if we try to enter.” Moses and the people have a problem. One group is not telling the truth. Who should they believe? [Marcia Berneger]
