Ladino Words, Customs Highlighted in Board Book for Rosh Hashanah

For those who grew up in the Sephardic tradition, this board book intended for children aged 4 and under may be a simple primer about Rosh Hashanah.  But for those Jews who grew up in the Ashkenazic culture, it is an introduction to the way Sephardic Jews celebrate a familiar holiday. American Jewish Group Supports New Zealand Memorial to Airmen Imprisoned at Buchenwald

Upon arriving at Buchenwald, the Allied prisoners were not placed in the main camp.  They were destined for special treatment.  The Nazi Commandant sent them to the “Little Camp,” the Jewish Camp.  They slept on the ground for days, no food, clothing – rags like Jewish prisoners. [Jerry Klinger]

Alaskan Synagogue Depends on Volunteers

Two Torahs saved from the Holocaust were obtained, one from the Czech Republic; the other from Hungary.  A congregant whose hobby is woodworking built the Holy Ark within which to keep them. Another congregant created a rustic chuppah.  Jewish books were donated to the congregational library.  Temple Sukkat Shalom (Shelter of Peace) is small, yet compact. [Donald H. Harrison]

Mrs. Spider Teaches Her Son Sammy About Judaism

Whenever Sammy the spider observes the human family of Jason Shapiro celebrating a Jewish holiday, he invariably expresses the wish that he too could have that experience. Just as invariably, Sammy’s mother, Mrs. Spider, tells him that spiders don’t do that, but rather “spiders spin webs.” [Donald H. Harrison]

SDJW Publisher Seeks Successor

On August 7, I will celebrate my 80th birthday. I need a walker to get around so I can’t cover as many stories as I previously could. So, I’d like to take a less active role in San Diego’s only daily Jewish publication, which is sustained by some advertising and a loyal cadre of volunteers who contribute articles gratis. [Donald H.
