Historic Marker Rejected at Site of Attempted Assassination of Donald Trump

January 16, 2025

The assassination attempt on Donald Trump was a historical event of major import. I approached the Connequenessing Township about placing a historical marker recognizing the terrible event. The assassination site is partially in their purview. JASHP was going to pay for it and fabricate it. The marker would be a gift to them, to be sited where they felt appropriate. [Jerry Klinger]

Parsha Shemot: The Psychology of Compassion and Connection

January 16, 2025

When Hashem calls Moses to confront Pharaoh and lead the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses responds with an expression of self-doubt: “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should take the children of Israel out of Egypt?” Hashem’s reply is profound in its psychological and emotional depth: “For I will be with you, and this is the sign for you that it was I Who sent you. When you take the people out of Egypt, you will worship Hashem on this mountain.” {Michael R. Mantell, Ph.D]

OpEd: Media Often Slants Its Coverage of Israel and Gaza

January 15, 2025

The Times and other publications frequently ignore important stories out of Israel or possible antisemitic acts in America. That leaves readers in various coverage areas ignorant of events. We are talking about regions with large Jewish populations that care about these matters. [Bruce S. Ticker]

Satire: Acts of Compliance (Melody: The Sound of Silence)

January 14, 2025

Shameless lackies of the Prez.
Repeating all the things he says.
To procure financial favors
For the loyalty he savors.
The man, whom they once had hated
Must be sated
With acts of their compliance. … {Laurie Baron]

Never Stop Questioning the Whyfors of Biblical Expression

January 14, 2025

Ten of the eleven portions in the book of Exodus and many portions in other of the five books of Moses begin with the Hebrew letter vav. Why? How should it be translated? Lexicographer Reuben Alcalay defines the letter vav as “and,” “also,” “but,” “therefore,” and “then.”Most translators use “and,” which does not seem appropriate in modern English. Perhaps “then” is better, but it is rarely used. [Rabbi Dr. Israel Drazin]

Gaza Developments: Imminent Ceasefire and Rise of Mohammed Sinwar as Hamas Leader

January 13, 2025

Facilitated by Qatar, Egypt, the current U.S. administration, and the incoming administration under President-elect Donald Trump, the ceasefire talks reflect a high-stakes international effort. Increased pressure and threats from Trump have influenced Hamas’s willingness to engage in negotiations after Hamas refused to negotiate in good faith forcing Qatar to pause its help last year.
