David Wolpe to give free lecture at Congregation Beth Israel

SAN DIEGO (Press Release) — Congregation Beth Israel continues the celebration of its 150th anniversary with a special appearance by renowned Rabbi David Wolpe at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 19.

Rabbi Wolpe, who has been named one of the 50 most influential rabbis in America by Newsweek magazine three times, will discuss “Where Leaders Become Heroes and Heroes Make Leaders” as part of Congregation Beth Israel’s ongoing Speaker Series, which features seven distinguished Jewish scholars throughout the 2010-11 anniversary celebration.

There is no fee to attend and a dessert reception will follow. Attendees are asked to RSVP, which can be done at www.cbisd.org/rsvp.

As part of  Wolpe’s appearance, Beth Israel will honor congregation members who have served as presidents and executive directors of San Diego Jewish organizations.

Beth Israel has long been an incubator for Jewish leaders as well as a place for the greater San Diego community to convene for 150 years. The synagogue was the first and only Jewish religious institution in San Diego for nearly 50 years. Throughout its 150-year history, it has been important not only to its members but also to the non-Jewish community of Southern California and to the history of Reform Judaism in America.

Congregation Beth Israel includes 1,200 member households living throughout San Diego County and maintains an active affiliation with the Union for Reform Judaism.

The congregation’s award-winning campus is the third building it has occupied during its 150 years. Numerous anniversary events are scheduled throughout the year, most of which will take place at the La Jolla complex.
