SAN DIEGO — Numerous press releases cross our desk concerning upcoming events in the Jewish community.  As we get them, we’ll pass them onto you so you can add them to your personal calendars.

FILNER FUNDRAISER— U.S. Rep. Bob Filner, a member of two members of the Jewish community considered to be a major candidate for mayor (with the other being Dist. Atty. Bonnie Dumanis) will be hosted at a fundraiser from 5 p.m to 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 24, at the Miller residence, 921 25th St, in the Golden Hill section of San Diego.  The suggested donation is $100, but the invitation also says “pay whatever you can afford” with $500 being the maximum contribution per person per election under city law.

SCHOLAR IN RESIDENCE — Zvi Gitelman, a professor of Judaic Studies and Political Science at the University of Michigan, will discuss the origin and meaning of Jewish names in a free lecture at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Beth Jacob Congregation, 4855 College Avenue.

SCHOLAR IN RESIDENCE — Zvi Gitelman, a professor of Judaic Studies and Political Science at the University of Michigan, will discuss “Can Israel be Both a Democracy and a Distinctly Jewish State?” at 9 a.m., and will follow up with an 11:30 a.m. brunch lecture “The Russian Revolution in Israel Politics and Society,” both free lectures on Sunday, Feb. 26, at Beth Jacob Congregation, 4855 College Avenue.

ENGAGING ISRAEL–Shalom Hartman Institute of Israel offers a new course taught by Rabbi Philip Graubart and Dr. Ray Fink for Jewish Leaders, “Engaging Israel: Foundations of a New Relationship”  to be held 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.  on eight Thursday evenings March 14, 21, 28, April 18, 25, May 2, 9, 16, at the Lawrence Family JCC, 4126 Executive Drive.  Fee: $69 JCC or Congregation Beth El members; and $80 for visitors.
