Morris quits as Jewish Federation CEO; Sonduck named as interim; search committee formed

SAN DIEGO (Press Release)– The resignation of Steven Morris as president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of San Diego was announced yesterday by Claire Ellman,  board chair.

In a letter to the San Diego Jewish community, she wrote:

“I am writing to inform you that Steven J. Morris, President and CEO of Federation, has tendered his resignation effective March 30, 2012.

“I am pleased to report to you that the Board of Directors has appointed Michael Sonduck as Interim President and CEO effective immediately. As many of you already know, Michael has been Federation’s chief operating officer since September 2006. In that capacity he has worked closely with our Board and staff as well as most of our community partners. The Board’s unanimous decision reflects our confidence that Michael will provide the interim professional leadership Federation needs during this transition. I know you will join me in thanking Michael for accepting this responsibility.

“Regarding his resignation Morris said, “It has been an honor and a privilege for me to work at Federation. My passion and commitment to our work throughout the community, in Israel, and throughout the world is as strong as ever. The leadership and staff at Federation are outstanding and I know that they will continue to build on the accomplishments we have achieved during my tenure here.”

“Steve will continue to provide assistance with the transition through April 30, and we wish him luck in his future endeavors.

“Simultaneously, Theresa Dupuis and Brian Tauber, both long-serving members of the Federation Board, have agreed to co-chair the Search Committee to secure the services of a new President and CEO for Federation. As soon as the committee is fully formed and has undertaken its preliminary work we will report to you again.

“With the support of our Board of Directors and community leaders I trust that we will successfully manage this transition period. I also invite you to keep up with our transition news at our website www.JewishInSanDiego.org.   Thank you.”
