District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis has won plaudits from Justin Brooks, director of the California Innocence Project, for usually being willing to look over old cases that the project based at Cal Western School of Law in San Diego deems as possible miscarriages of justice. Steven Greenhut in a page A-2 story in the U-T reported that Brooks said Dumanis always sits down and looks at the evidence.

A bill by State Sen. Lois Wolk (D-Davis) to amend a $11.1 billion water bond measure that is to go before the voters this November received a majority but fell short of the required two-thirds vote needed. An AP story on Page A-4 of the U-T said the bill may be reconsidered later this year. A photo showed Wolk, Senate President pro tempore Darrell Steinberg and Fran Pavley (D-Agoura Hills) conferring on the Senate floor.

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman told a news conference about the arrest of Carlo Mercado, 29, in the triple slaying of Ilona Flint, Salvatore Belvedere and Gianni Belvedere, all in their early 20s, six months ago. Three U-T reporters – Debbi Baker, Teri Figueroa and Lydsay Winkley—worked the story that began on page B-1.
