LA JOLLA, California — Judge Murry Luftig, long-time resident of San Diego, passed away on August 27 at the age of 92. He is survived by his wife of sixty-eight years, Rita Luftig, and his children, Vicki Pierce, Mitchell Luftig, Andrea Ferber, and Laura Luftig, along with seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Judge Luftig was the first of his family to attend college. He attended UCLA and later USC , where he received his law degree. Judge Luftig served as an attorney for twenty-eight years before being appointed to the San Diego County Municipal Court by Governor Edmund G. “Jerry” Brown. He served as a judge for 14 years.

Judge Luftig served in the United States Army in India during World War II. He was president of the San Diego County Law Library and served on California’s Health Manpower Commission, where he worked to ensure physician services in underserved areas.

Judge Luftig’s “warmth, compassion, and humor are sorely missed,” his son Mitch observed.
