BENNINGTON, Indiana (Cleveland Jewish News/Exclusive to JNS.org) — An 11-year-old girl, Jadyn Larky, was killed June 21 when a tree fell on her cabin in Camp Livingston, a Jewish overnight summer camp in Bennington, Ind. Her funeral was held Thursday.
The tree was struck by lightning and fell at around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Indiana camp, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office in Switzerland County. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene by the Switzerland County Coroner’s Office.
An undisclosed number of other children and three adults also occupied the cabin, the sheriff’s office said. No one else was seriously injured.
Jadyn Larky, the daughter of Dr. Howard Larky and Liza Yarov Larky, was a student at Cassingham Elementary School in Bexley, Ohio. Jeannine Hetzler, principal of Cassingham Elementary, said the school building has been opened to provide counseling for Jadyn’s classmates and their families.
“I’m doing what I can to support the students here,” Hetzler said.
A message on the website of Jewish Family Services of Columbus, Ohio, expressed “deepest condolences” to Larky family and its “thoughts and prayers” with the camp’s other participating children and staff.
