    “The loss of one of our police officers is a loss for all of San Diego. I send my deepest condolences to the officer’s family and loved ones, and prayers for the full recovery of the wounded officer. From my time on City Council I have been aware of the dangers our police officers face and I’m tremendously grateful to them for the risks they take every day to keep our communities safe. San Diego is fortunate to have the steady leadership of Chief Zimmerman in this difficult time.”

    “It is unclear as to what lead up to the gunfire, but an investigation is underway. My thoughts and prayers are with both officers, their family, and friends.”

    “The shooting of two SDPD officers has sent a shock wave through law enforcement and the wider San Diego community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the officers’ family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time. This senseless act once again highlights the dangers our peace officers face on a daily basis as they work to ensure and protect the public’s safety. The District Attorney’s Crimes Against Peace Officers Unit is working closely with SDPD to investigate and review this case so those responsible for this cowardly act will be held accountable.”

  4. The Youth Action Movement (YAM) headed by Chabad Rabbi Zevi New issued this statement:

    Today our city is in mourning. Last night two of San Diego’s finest were shot while protecting our communities – one hero has lost his life. These two brave officers are also husbands and young fathers. Our thoughts, prayers, and full support is with the SDPD families and heroes now and always.

    Today, we must show love and proactive behavior in their honor. Today, our world needs extra light. We encourage all woman and girls to join us in bringing light into our homes with the lighting of Shabbat candles.

    The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is deeply saddened by the shootings of San Diego Police Department law enforcement officers last night.

    “We condemn this horrific attack against San Diego law enforcement officers. Our deepest condolences go to the families, friends and colleagues of Officer Jonathan DeGuzman. While we await more information and details of the event, we mourn Officer DeGuzman and extend our wishes for a complete and speedy recovery to Officer Wade Irwin.

    These acts of violence against our law enforcement community must stop.

    ADL deeply appreciates its productive working relationship with the San Diego Police Department as well as many other local law enforcement agencies in working together to build stronger and safer communities.”
