LA JOLLA, California (Press Release) – San Diego’s internationally recognized San Diego Jewish Book Fair celebrates its 22nd year with an intriguing mix of more than 30 leading authors in their fields including: Jennifer Weiner, Rich Cohen, Shep Gordon, Samuel M. Katz, Todd Buchholz, Dov Waxman, Daniel Oppenheimer, Nina Tassler, Peter Himmelman and Fred Kaplan. This year’s lineup strikes a balance of arts and intellect, ideas and imagination, history and humor, and also will include spirited discussions about cyber wars, politics, the economy and the military. HEADLINERS:
On Sunday October 30 at 7:00pm at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, come meet Samuel M. Katz author of The Ghost Warriors: Inside Israel’s Undercover War Against Suicide Terrorism. Terror and tragedy appear to be on the rise these days. But there’s always someone fighting back. Learn about the Ya’mas, an Israeli special forces group created to combat the Palestinian suicide attackers who terrorized Israel between 2000 and 2008. In The Ghost Warriors, Middle East security expert Samuel Katz gives us an “action packed [book]… refreshingly full of sound research rather than polemic” (Kirkus) on the largely unsung counterterrorist team that went undercover and successfully degraded and destroyed a key terrorist group.
It’s no mystery that the US economy is struggling. Why it’s struggling has baffled more than a few thought leaders, but not Todd Buchholz. The JCC welcomes the former White House director of economic policy and managing director of the Tiger hedge fund as he shows us how “nations are just as likely to unravel after periods of prosperity as after periods of depression.” But based on what he has seen in other developed countries, he also sees a path to renewal… and it’s both surprising and simpler than you might think. Next up, on November 3 at 7:00pm, Dov Waxman’s Trouble in the Tribe: The American Jewish Conflict over Israel. Israel is often a divisive hot topic in a presidential election and lately it’s become one in America’s Jewish communities, too. Once an easy rallying point, Trouble in the Tribe shows us how many American Jews are no longer all on the same page regarding Israel. While most feel an attachment at an emotional level, newer generations may struggle with support at a policy level putting them in opposition not just with Israeli Jews, but often with their own family members as well. Join the author for bagels and a thoughtful discussion.
Of course in an election year, there must be politics. Exit Right is required reading for a contentious election year. On November 4 at noon, the JCC hosts a luncheon with author of Exit Right, Daniel Oppenheimer. Learn more about why people take the positions they take and what—if anything—can be done to change those positions.
Headlining the closing event on November 6 at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, Jacobs Family Campus, in the David & Dorothea Garfield at 7 p.m., Fred Kaplan, a Pulitzer–Prize winning journalist, in Conversation with NPR’s Brooke Gladstone, as they discuss cyber attacks and how we are fighting these kinds of wars in his book, Dark Territory: The Secret History of Cyber War. He takes us down the dark halls of the NSA and into war-torn areas of the world such as Syria, the former republics of Russia, Iraq, and Iran to help us better understand the nature—and purpose—of cyber-attacks. But take heart! In the end, “Dark Territory is the rare tome that leaves the reader feeling generally good about their civilian and military leadership” (The New York Times).
