I thought you might enjoy this piece of trivia.

Queen Elizabeth and I share a birthday. Each year since my 8th birthday, I would send Lillibet a birthday card and gift, and each year, I would receive a typed letter from one of her Ladies-in-Waiting, thanking me for said gift. The writer would always explain that as I’d not been introduced to the Queen she could not correspond with me directly.

One year, I gave her a little china pot in which to place her bubble gum when she slept, because it would not be very regal to stick one’s gum on one’s bedpost, would it? Another year it was a pin I’d made in Brownies. You get the idea. Each time, I’d get a reply, typed on a typewriter, from either Buckingham or Kensington.

On my bat mitzvah, I invited Queenie to come to my big event. I asked my mom, “How will I recognize her?” Mom didn’t miss a beat, and replied, “She’ll be the one in the crown.”

Years later, I was visiting London, and thought I’d pop in on my Birthday Twin. No dice, I couldn’t get passed the Beefeaters at the gate. Such a snubbing! Well, suffice it to say, I no longer send her birthday greetings!
