Cherina Eisenberg returns to San Diego as a rabbi

Rabbi Cherina Eisenberg

SAN DIEGO (SDJW)– The recently ordained Jewish Renewal Rabbi, Cherina Eisenberg, will be speaking at Tifereth Israel Synagogue on Thursday evening, Noverber 2. Her topic will be, “B’tzelem Elohim: Seeing the Devine In Our Faces.” This free program is open to all the women of the community.

On Saturday morning, November 4, Rabbi Eisenberg will  deliver the Drash at the Shabbat service of the Elijah Minyan of Carlsbad, and she will be leading a workshop on The Priestly Blessing, following the service.

After her San Diego stay, the rabbi will travel to the Brandeis-Bardin Campus of The American Jewish University in Simi Valley for a retreat conducted by Rabbis Without Borders, a three-year old program, developed by CLAL, to bring Jewish wisdom into our lives from all streams of Judaism.

Rabbi Eisenberg is a 2017-2018 Fellow and was selected as one of 18 rabbis from different denominations to participate in the retreat. She was the only one from the Jewish Renewal Movement.

Her own background is multi-denominational. Although San Diego was never her permanent home, she attended first grade here at the Chabad Day School with Arthur Zuckerman as her teacher. That was during the time her family spent a year in San Diego, when her father, well-known radiologist, and author, Ron Eisenberg, was on Sabbatical.

Rabbi Eisenberg had her Bat Mitzvah at Tifereth Israel Synagogue, where her grandmother, Rose Schiff, z’l, was an active member and served as chair of the congregation’s Friendship Club. Her aunt, Eileen Wingard, continues her membership in that Congregation.

The rabbi is multi-talented. A gifted pianist, she received her B.A. in Music From the University of Washington in Seattle. She has accompanied her concert violinist mother, Zina Schiff, in performances and on recordings.

The young rabbi is also a certified Vegetarian Chef, having studied in New York and done an apprenticeship at the Millennium Restaurant in San Francisco. She  wrote a food column for San Diego Jewish Press Heritage, before the newspaper was discontinued.

She is an accomplished dancer and choreographer, having taught dance at Jewish summer camps.

The rabbi spent a summer at the Brandeis-Bardin Institute, working with composer and song leader, Cantor Danny Maseng. She earned her M. A. degree from the Education Department of the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York.

Currently, she is serving as the Cantorial Soloist at Temple Sinai, a Reform Congregation in Brookline,  Massachusetts, and giving workshops and talks on spirituality and wellness.
