Subsequently the U.S. State Department issued this statement:
The following is attributable to Spokesperson John Kirby:
Secretary Kerry held an impromptu meeting this afternoon with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir. The Secretary offered support and condolences for the recent terrorist attacks in the Kingdom. The two discussed the need to combat and defeat Daesh, including in Syria, where the Kingdom has offered to commit troops to the counter-Daesh campaign. The Secretary and the Foreign Minister also discussed the need for a political transition in Syria, the situation in Libya, the effort to reach a political resolution in Yemen, and recent developments between the Israelis and Palestinians.
The U.S. State Department issued this comment:
The United States extends its condolences to the families of all those killed and injured in yesterday’s attacks in Jeddah, Qatif, and Medina, Saudi Arabia. We condemn the violence that has marred the final days of Ramadan and brought sorrow to so many innocent families.
We stand — as we have stood — with the people of Saudi Arabia as they confront the scourge of terrorism. These attacks underscore the scope of the threat we all face, and remind us of the need to continue to stay focused on combatting violent extremism and bringing those responsible for it to justice.
