SAN DIEGO — When a gunman attacked Chabad of Poway on the last day of Passover 2019, killing Lori Gilbert-Kaye and wounding three other people, one of the first people too rush to the synagogue and offer comfort was Mayor Steve Vaus of Poway, who is also well-known as a country musician.

It wasn’t just a photo op; Vaus continued to offer comfort and official city support to the stricken congregation through the mourning period for Kaye and remains a good friend to the entire Jewish community of Poway, which also includes Temple Adat Shalom and Congregation Ner Tamid.

There are certain moments in history when the measure of a man or woman is plain to see, and in that moment of tragedy, Steve Vaus proved himself to be a compassionate public servant and a friend to the Jewish people.

We are certain that he will make a fine county supervisor, and unhesitatingly endorse him in the upcoming election in which he is opposed by fellow Republican Joel Anderson, a former state senator.

Last Passover 2019, Vaus was a friend in deed.   Now he is a friend in need of our community’s votes.

  1. Steve Vaus is a true patriot and fortunately not afraid to show compassion, one of his many strengths. I’ve known him for over 40 years. He’s a leader.
