San Diego’s New Jewish Delicatessen Will Celebrate Immigrant Culture and Cuisine

SAN DIEGO (Press Release) — Opening doors in late-August in Torrey Pines, Tracy Borkum, principal of Urban Kitchen Group (UKG), has announced plans for Gold Finch, a modern delicatessen rooted in Jewish immigrant culture. Gold Finch is a deeply personal endeavor for Tracy—who draws on her childhood memories of growing up in London’s Jewish epicenters, Golders Green and Finchley neighborhoods, for which the restaurant was named.

The new quick-service delicatessen and full-service restaurant will honor her Jewish heritage by recontextualizing staples of Ashkenazi and Sephardic-style cooking, including family recipes passed down from Tracy’s mother, aunt, and grandmother. Employing the same degree of rigor and slow food ethos associated other Urban Kitchen Group brands, Gold Finch’s culinary team is being led by Chef Partner Tim Kolanko and Chefs Jeff Armstrong, Frankie Becerra, and Adrian Mendoza.

Gold Finch plans to open with breakfast and lunch served Monday through Friday alongside an afternoon nosh menu. A deli counter will sell an assortment of cured meats, smoked fish, housemade pastries, sides and more. Diners may look forward to the rollout of a leisurely weekend brunch later this summer, as well as specialty offerings during holidays such as Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Hanukkah and Passover. In addition to a selection of wine & beer, the beverage program will spotlight partners including Dark Horse coffee and Paru tea while offering classic housemade favorites such as chocolate phosphate and egg creams.

Gold Finch is the hospitality anchor of Muse at Torrey Pines, a LEED and WELL certified Class A, 186,000 square-foot life science campus which was recently redeveloped by The RMR Group. Located at 3040 Science Park Road, the eatery’s 1,400 square-foot interior and exterior space is being artfully designed by the restaurateur and design maven herself, Tracy Borkum.

On debuting the concept at Muse, Tracy says, “The location, in the heart of a region where world-class academic institutions and life science firms have clustered and space is hard to come by, is a major opportunity for UKG to continue the momentum we’ve created as a hospitality group.”

Founded in 1995, Urban Kitchen Group is credited with helping to blaze a trail for the emerging hospitality progression in San Diego and Orange County with concepts including CUCINA urbana (Bankers Hill), cucina SORELLA (Kensington), CUCINA enoteca (Del Mar, Irvine, Newport Beach), and full-service industry leader, Urban Kitchen Catering. Within the last 12 months, UKG’s collective has grown exponentially with major projects including Urban Kitchen food pavilion and marketplace at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, ARTIFACT and CRAFT Café inside Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park, and a recently acquired catering facility and café on West Morena Boulevard.
