Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) said she will have to move from her Washington D.C. home now that the address has been publicized in the wake of an early morning raid Oct. 12. She said she has received death threats in the intervening days, and that she worries about her safety and that of family members.
President Donald Trump at an Iowa rally called on Omar to resign her House seat following disclosure that she used another name — Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar — in a recent court filing. Her former husband is named Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.
According to Newsweek, Trump told the crowd:
“It was just revealed just a little while ago that … her name is not Ilhan Omar, the one that she used to get elected and sworn into Congress. She used a fake name to be sworn in. I assume she must immediately have to resign from Congress.” He later declared: “The Republicans have just picked up a seat in the House.”
A spokesperson for Omar told Newsweek that the controversy arises so close to the Nov. 3 elections to
distract from Trump and Republican governance, and said it was “disgraceful that the media continues to give this lie oxygen.”
