Three casually dressed gunmen shouting “Allahu Akbar” opened fire on a funeral procession at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in the town of Hmoud in southern Jordan. Seven people were confirmed dead after the barrage and between 30 and 40 others were injured, with two of those wounded in critical condition. The unidentified assailants made their escape.
Jordan’s King Abdullah II said on X (formerly Twitter): “The blood of Jordanians is precious, and we will strike those who transgress against this country with an iron fist.” Jordan’s Prime Minister Jafar Hassan speculated that “extremist terrorist ideology,” which permits Sunni Muslims to declare others to be infidels played a role in the massacre in Karak province. Christians comprise 2 percent of Jordan’s population.
The prime minister declared three days of mourning.
