Jewish Trivia Quiz: The Shofar

Jews around the world will once again hear the sound of the shofar as Rosh Hashanah is celebrated this week. The shofar is typically made of a ram’s horn, but in Yemenite tradition the horn of a kudu is used. The shofar ceremony comprises two blessings followed by a series of blasts consisting of three different notes: tekiah–one long blast, shevarim–three broken sounds, and teruah–nine staccato notes. The total number of blasts is traditionally 100 for Ashkenazic Jews and 101 for Sephardim, with Yemenite Jews sounding 41 blasts. ‘Just Kidding’: Trump tries to be funny with Zelensky

Like most Americans, President Trump learned only recently that before Volodymyr Zelensky became the President of Ukraine, he was a professional comedian.

And not just a comedian – but a Jewish comedian.

So, with visions of lox and gefilte fish and brisket dancing in his head, Trump is planning to appeal to Zelensky as one jokester to another, in order to convince him to get politically damaging dirt on former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.

Hounding the Headlines: September 20, 2019

This is the first time I am residing with a Jewish family that celebrates what I think is called the High Collie Days.  I’m not exactly sure what that entails, but I want to fit in.  Tomorrow night is Sleek Coat, and, I definitely have one.  People recite prayers and readings about forgiveness.  I might skip it because I haven’t attacked any dogs, bit any humans, or scared any people in the past year.

Jewish-interest license plate: 5L’Chaim

Karen Beth Pearlman gets the credit for spotting this Jewish-interest license plate, which offers us some opportunities for speculation. L’Chaim means “To Life!” So 5 L’Chaim means “5 To Life.” While that may sound like the length of a prison sentence, it more likely refers to five happy people, perhaps ready to engage in the traditional merrymakers’ toast of “To Life!”
