‘Chicago’ Features Minimal Set and Costumes, Maximal Choreography

We follow the story of two murderesses; Roxie Hart (Katie Frieden) and Velma Kelly (Kaitlin Brown) and their sensational murder trials.  Being that it’s set in the roaring 20s which didn’t have modern day social media, the flashy and charismatic and lawyer Billy Flynn (Connor Sullivan) is able to manipulate the press and jury with wild and conflicting stories about his clients, or as he calls it razzle-dazzle, in his attempts to acquit his client. [Sandi Masori]

Brazucas! A Taste of Home Cooking at Brazil By the Bay

She suggested a dish from the Brazilian state of Bahia, Moqueca.  It’s a curry-style fish dish (I asked them to hold the shrimp) that is served with rice.  While there’s no actual curry in it — because the sauce is made with coconut milk and has bell peppers — the flavor reminded me of Thai food.  It was a little sweet, but also savory from the bell peppers.  Pretty good actually. [Sandi Masori]

Comedic ‘Fiddler’ Uses Clever Staging

Whether it was Tevye mugging during the dance off with the Russians for “To Life” or even the usually scary dream sequence about “Fruma-Sarah,” director Omri Schein really brought out the physical comedy and rubber faces of the cast.  And it worked.  I don’t remember hearing the audience laugh during Fiddler as much they did for this show. [Sandi Masori]

When You Think of Art at the Mingei, Don’t Forget the Food

We decided to follow her suggestions and got the hibiscus masala and matcha matcha mocktail drinks.  The hibiscus was ok, a little bitter but made me feel like I was being healthy.  The matcha, which I’m not usually a fan of, was to die for.  It tasted like a creamy green tea whipped ice cream float.  Really yummy.  For food we ordered the pea and potato samosa, the beet and Asian pear salad, and the roasted barramundi. Mixed Reactions to Kosher Hamitbach in New Mission Valley Location 

In order to make people who don’t keep kosher care about a kosher restaurant it has to have three things: 1- great food first and foremost.  Especially when you’re paying a premium for kosher meat, it must not only be as good as the non-kosher version, but even better to justify the higher cost.  2- great service, if you don’t feel welcome in the restaurant, why would you ever go back?  And 3- good ambiance.  [Sandi Masori]
