Preserving Holocaust memory in the future

For years I have been predicting that all the Holocaust education, the museums, the books and the testimonies will not save Holocaust memory. I remember saying this at a recent lecture I gave and a teacher challenged me telling me we had a great Holocaust commission. Yes I answered, I served on it for nine years, was one of its original founders, and served as one of the editors of the curriculum. [Rabbi Bernhard H. Rosenberg]

San Diego Dems cancel anti-Semitism debate

The chairman of the San Diego County Democratic Party, Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, doesn’t want the debate over anti-Semitism in the party’s ranks to be held until after the Nov. 3 election, if ever. On Sept. 10, Rodriguez-Kennedy sent a message to the county party’s central committee explaining his reason for wanting a delay. [Donald H. Harrison, Our Shtetl San Diego County]

The volume of Jewish music in America

As I read this comprehensive, engaging book about Jewish Music in America, I kept thinking about the extensive music collection we have in our Astor Judaica Library of the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center and what a wonderful course we could develop, using this volume as the textbook and our library’s lp records, CDs and DVDs for illustrations. We have most of the music Fruhauf writes about in her book. [Eileen Wingard]

Prospective and veteran clergy members contrast in style

Mark Dolson (Timothy Benson) is a seminarian ready to change the world, or at least the Catholic Church. He’d like to see women admitted to the priesthood. And he believes the church’s attitude opposed to homosexuality is outdated and archaic. Most of all, he believes that it is the job of the clergy to shake their parishioners from their materialism and complacency in order for them to truly follow the teachings of Jesus. OpEd: Tim Nader for Judge

Two years I wrote an opinion piece for San Diego Jewish World supporting my friend, Tim Nader, for San Diego Superior Court judge.  I pointed out his superb qualifications for the position.  The unstated subtext for the piece was that as a member of the San Diego Jewish Community, who had known Tim for more than 35 years, was vouching for the personal character of a Lebanese American lawyer. This Rosh Hashanah, ‘If you will it, it is no dream’

As we approach these Days of Awe, I would like to share several stories that have touched me, and I think will touch you too about the people you, Jewish National Fund-USA, and I have supported over the past year. I’m going to tell you about an inspiring young lady who has come home to Israel; an incredible healthcare worker who has found a new way to connect with people with disabilities; an agricultural training center that’s bringing hope and prosperity to developing countries; and a story of how Jewish National Fund-USA is creating a global culinary capital in Israel’s north to feed the world. Obscure Biblical Statements Explained

Rabbi David Fohrman published a book called Genesis: A Parsha Companion. In his book, he points out obscure and questionable matters in each of the twelve portions in Genesis and offers his view of what the lesson is that underlies the verse or event. The interpretations are usually based on his own ideas or ancient Midrashim and classical Bible commentaries such as Rashi and Nachmanides which he accepts as capturing the true intent of the Torah. Whether a reader agrees with his interpretation or not, the identification of obscure items and his interpretations and discussions about them make us think. [Rabbi Dr. Israel Drazin]

Being Grateful for Gratitude

Those who awaken daily to a mind filled with gratitude find grace and graciousness throughout life. The word gratitude is anchored in the Latin word gratia, meaning these gifts for, and of a positive life. And the good news is you can train yourself to open your eyes, your heart, at the start of every day, to grateful thoughts – especially valuable during these emotionally trying times of COVID19 when building wellbeing is particularly essential to living healthily. Rabbi Goldstein’s brother also guilty of tax fraud

Mendel Goldstein, the owner of a videography business based in Brooklyn, New York, pleaded guilty in federal court On Monday to tax evasion charges relating to a long-running conspiracy with his brother, Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein. Book review: ‘Hatemonger’ skewers Stephen Miller

Guerrero adroitly compiles in a fast-moving, soundly researched 275 pages a text that connects the dots between Miller’s own history, personal stories of Trump and Miller’s victims, backstage intrigue and shocking events thanks in part to Miller’s engineering. Miller, who predictably would not cooperate with Guerrero, is part of a hard-right network that has long sought the kinds of ultra-conservative policies the current White House is attempting to implement.
